Protecting Your Ride: Why Finance Products Matter
By Ben Barbato, Finance Manager, Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram – Malvern, OhioHi there, I'm Ben Barbato, Finance Manager here at Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Malvern. If you've bought a vehicle from us, there's a good chance we've sat down together in my office to finish the paperwork. That's my favorite part of the process, because it's where I get to help you protect the investment you just made.
I know the word "add-ons" can make people a little nervous. So let me take the mystery out of it. Below, I'll walk you through the four protection products I get asked about most, what each one actually does, and who tends to benefit. No pressure, just straight talk from your neighbor down the road.
Service Contracts: Peace of Mind After the Factory Warranty
A service contract (some folks call it an extended warranty) covers the cost of certain mechanical and electrical repairs after your factory warranty runs out. Today's Jeeps, Rams, Dodges, and Chryslers are packed with technology, and that's great until a sensor, a touchscreen, or a transmission component needs replacing. Those repairs can run well into the thousands. Here's what I like about them:
- Predictable costs. You know what you'll pay for covered repairs, so a surprise breakdown doesn't wreck your monthly budget.
- Factory-trained technicians. Repairs can be handled right here in our service department with genuine parts.
- Extras that help in a pinch. Many plans include roadside assistance, towing, and rental car coverage while your vehicle is in the shop.
- Better resale value. A transferable plan can be a real selling point when it's time to trade or sell.
GAP Insurance: Closing the Gap if the Unexpected Happens
New vehicles lose value quickly, especially in the first couple of years. If your vehicle is totaled or stolen, your auto insurance pays what it's worth today, not what you still owe on the loan. The difference between those two numbers is the "gap," and without coverage, it comes out of your pocket. Here's a simple example. Say you owe $32,000 on your loan, but your insurance company values the vehicle at $26,000. That leaves you $6,000 short on a vehicle you can't even drive anymore. GAP coverage is designed to take care of that difference (minus any deductible, depending on the plan).
GAP makes the most sense if you:
- Put little or no money down
- Financed for 60 months or longer
- Rolled negative equity from a trade-in into your new loan
- Drive a lot of miles, which speeds up depreciation
Tire & Wheel Protection: Built for Ohio Roads
If you've driven around Carroll County after a long winter, you know exactly why this one matters. Potholes, road debris, nails in construction zones, and curbs that seem to jump out of nowhere all take a toll on your tires and wheels.Tire & Wheel protection typically covers the repair or replacement of tires and wheels damaged by road hazards. That's a big deal when you consider:
- Larger wheels cost more. Many Rams, Jeeps, and Durangos ride on 18- to 20-inch wheels, and a single replacement can cost several hundred dollars.
- Tires add up fast. A quality truck or SUV tire isn't cheap, and road damage doesn't care how much tread you had left.
- Help when you need it. Many plans include roadside assistance for flat tire changes, so you're not stuck on the shoulder.
Paint Sealant: Keep That New-Vehicle Shine
There's nothing like the shine of a brand-new vehicle rolling off the lot. Ohio weather, though, has other plans. Road salt, UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, and acid rain all work against your paint year-round.A professional paint sealant adds a protective layer over your factory finish. The benefits:
- Protection from the elements. It helps shield your paint from salt, sun fading, and environmental fallout.
- Easier cleanup. Dirt and grime wash off more easily, so your vehicle looks great with less effort.
- No waxing required. Many sealant programs mean you can skip regular waxing altogether.
- Stronger trade-in value. A vehicle with well-kept paint simply looks better and is worth more down the road.
Let's Find What Fits You
Here's the bottom line: not every product is right for every driver, and that's okay. My job isn't to sell you everything on the menu. It's to understand how you drive, how long you plan to keep your vehicle, and what fits your budget, then help you choose the protection that makes sense for you. Many of these products can be included in your financing, so you can protect your vehicle without a big out-of-pocket cost up front. Coverage details vary by plan, so I'll always walk you through exactly what's included before you sign anything.
