Why Regular Maintenance Matters: A Service Advisor's Guide to Keeping Your Vehicle Healthy

Hi, I'm Paul Paumier, and I'm a Service Advisor here at Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. Every day I talk with drivers who want the same thing: a vehicle that starts every morning, gets them where they're going safely, and doesn't hit them with a surprise repair bill. The single best way to get there is regular maintenance. It isn't glamorous, but it's the difference between a Jeep, Ram, Dodge, or Chrysler that runs strong for years and one that spends too much time on a lift. I want to walk you through why it matters, and how easy we make it for you.
Why Your Oil Change Interval Matters
Oil is your engine's lifeblood. It lubricates hundreds of moving parts, carries heat away, and traps dirt and debris so it doesn't grind against your engine's internals. Over time, that oil breaks down. It thins out, collects contaminants, and loses its ability to protect. When oil changes get pushed back, the engine starts paying the price. Old oil can turn to sludge, wear parts faster, hurt fuel economy, and in the worst cases lead to engine damage that costs far more than years of oil changes combined. Staying on schedule also keeps a clean service history, which helps protect your warranty coverage and your resale value.
So how often should you change it? The honest answer is that it depends on your vehicle and how you drive. Here's my simple advice:
- Watch your oil change indicator. Most of our vehicles have one that tracks your actual driving and tells you when it's time. When that message pops up, give us a call.
- Check your owner's manual. It lists the recommended interval and the right oil type for your engine. Using the correct oil matters just as much as changing it on time.
- Know if you drive in "severe" conditions. Lots of short trips, stop-and-go traffic, towing, dusty back roads, and Ohio's cold winters can all mean your oil needs changing sooner.
- Don't forget the calendar. Even if you don't drive much, oil ages. Most manufacturers recommend a change at least once a year regardless of mileage.
It's Not Just Oil
An oil change visit is also the perfect time to catch small things before they become big ones. When your vehicle comes in, these are some of the items worth keeping on your radar:- Tire rotations and pressure checks for even wear, better handling, and longer tire life
- Brake inspections so you know your pads and rotors are ready when you need them most
- Fluid checks including coolant, transmission, brake, and power steering fluid
- Air filters, both engine and cabin, for better performance and cleaner air inside
- Battery testing, especially heading into colder months when weak batteries tend to give out
- Wiper blades and lights, small items that make a big difference in bad weather
