How to Shop Used Cars Under $20,000 in Northeast Ohio

By Dan Millat, General Manager, Daystar Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram
"Used cars for sale near me" is one of the most common searches in our area, and for good reason. A good used car, truck or SUV under $20,000 can do everything a new one does for a lot less money. A bad one costs you twice.
After 20 years and more than 25,000 deals, here is what I tell friends and family to look for.

Check the history first

Ask for the vehicle history report before you fall in love with the paint. You want to see the number of owners, any reported accidents and a steady service record. Ask us for the report on any used vehicle on our lot. We were named a CARFAX Top-Rated Dealer in 2024 and 2025.

Look underneath

Ohio roads get a lot of salt, and salt causes rust. Look at the rocker panels, the wheel wells and the frame. Surface rust on an older vehicle is normal. Flaking metal or soft spots are not. If a seller will not let you look underneath, walk away.

Shop the payment and the price

A low price with a high interest rate is not a deal. Before you shop, know three numbers:
  1. The total price you are comfortable with
  2. The monthly payment that fits your budget
  3. What your trade is worth
You can get pre-qualified on our website in a few minutes, so you know your numbers before you visit.

Used cars, trucks and SUVs: what $20,000 buys

  • Cars: often the newest model year and lowest miles for the money.
  • SUVs: the widest selection, from compact crossovers to three-row family haulers.
  • Trucks: they hold their value, so expect more miles at this price. A well-kept truck with a clean history is still a smart buy.

Ask these five questions

  1. Can I see the history report?
  2. What reconditioning did you do?
  3. Has it been inspected by a technician?
  4. Is any warranty left, or available?
  5. Can I take it on a real test drive, on a highway and a back road?
A good dealer answers all five without hesitating.

See what is on the lot this week

Our used inventory changes every week, and we keep a dedicated Under $20K page on our website so you can see every budget-friendly vehicle in one place.

Bad Credit? Here’s How to Secure Your Next Auto Loan at Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram

Bad Credit? Here’s How to Secure Your Next Auto Loan at Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram

Bad Credit? Here’s How to Secure Your Next Auto Loan at Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram By Dan Millat, General Manager Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram | Malvern, Ohio If you’ve been putting off buying your next vehicle because of less-than-perfect credit, you’re not alone. Life happens. Unexpected expenses, medical bills, a job change, or past financial challenges can affect your credit score. The good news is that having less-than-perfect credit doesn’t automatically mean you can’t get approved for an auto loan. At Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Malvern, Ohio, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to explore their vehicle financing options. Our goal is to help you understand the process, find a vehicle that fits your needs, and work toward financing that makes sense for your budget. As General Manager, I want customers to know that a challenging credit history doesn’t have to put the brakes on their next vehicle purchase. With the right preparation and a dealership team ready to help, you may have more options than you realize. Here are some practical steps you can take to improve your chances of securing your next auto loan. 1. Understand Where Your Credit Stands Before you begin shopping, take some time to review your credit history. Knowing where you stand can help you set realistic expectations and prepare for conversations with lenders. Your credit score is one factor lenders may consider when reviewing an auto loan application. They may also look at your income, employment history, existing monthly debts, down payment, and previous auto loan history. If your credit score is lower than you'd like, don't assume financing is out of reach. Different lenders have different approval criteria, and one lender's decision may differ from another's. Tip: Review your credit reports for errors or outdated information. Correcting inaccurate information may help your credit profile, although improvements aren't guaranteed to happen immediately. 2. Set a Realistic Monthly Budget One of the most important steps in buying a vehicle is determining what you can comfortably afford. Before visiting our dealership, consider your monthly income and expenses. Remember that the cost of owning a vehicle includes more than your loan payment. You'll also want to account for insurance, fuel, routine maintenance, registration, and unexpected repairs. When evaluating financing options, look beyond the monthly payment alone. Consider the total amount financed, the interest rate, the loan term, and the total cost of borrowing. At Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, we encourage customers to focus on finding a vehicle and financing arrangement that fits their financial situation—not simply the largest loan they might qualify for. 3. Consider Saving for a Down Payment A down payment can play an important role in your auto financing application. Putting money down reduces the amount you need to borrow and may improve your chances of qualifying for certain loan options. A larger down payment may also help reduce your monthly payment and the total interest you pay over the life of the loan. If saving a large amount isn't realistic right now, don't let that stop you from asking about your options. The down payment required, if any, will depend on factors such as lender requirements, the vehicle you're purchasing, and your overall credit and financial profile. Our team can help you explore the possibilities based on your individual circumstances. 4. Gather Your Financing Documents Before You Apply Being prepared can make the financing process easier and help you respond to lender requests more quickly. Depending on your situation and the lender's requirements, you may be asked to provide: A valid driver's license or other acceptable identification. Recent pay stubs or other proof of income. Employment information. Proof of residence, such as a recent utility bill. Information about your current debts and monthly obligations. Down payment information, if applicable. Contact information for references, if requested by the lender. If you're self-employed or receive income from sources other than traditional employment, ask what documentation may be accepted to verify your income. Having these documents ready can help you move through the process with fewer delays. 5. Work With a Dealership That Understands Your Situation Applying for an auto loan when your credit isn't perfect can feel intimidating. You might worry about being turned down or feel uncomfortable discussing past financial difficulties. At Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, we understand that every customer's situation is different. We encourage you to have an honest conversation with our team about your financing goals, budget, and concerns. Our dealership can help you explore available financing opportunities through participating lenders, subject to their requirements and approval decisions. While no dealership can guarantee approval for every customer, we can help you understand the process and determine what options may be available. You don't have to figure everything out before you walk through our doors. Asking questions is a great place to start. 6. Choose the Right Vehicle for Your Financial Situation When financing with less-than-perfect credit, the vehicle you choose can make a difference. A vehicle with a more affordable purchase price may reduce the amount you need to finance. Depending on lender requirements, the vehicle's age, mileage, and value may also affect the financing options available to you. At Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, we offer Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram vehicles to meet a variety of driving needs. Whether you're looking for a dependable daily driver, a family-friendly SUV, a capable truck, or something else, our team can help you explore vehicles that align with your budget and financing goals. The best vehicle isn't necessarily the most expensive one. It's the one that meets your needs while keeping your finances on track. 7. Consider a Co-Signer Only if It Makes Sense In some cases, a qualified co-signer may help an applicant qualify for financing or obtain different loan terms. However, this depends on the lender and the details of the application. A co-signer agrees to take legal responsibility for the debt if the borrower doesn't make the required payments. Missed payments can affect both individuals' credit histories, and the loan may affect the co-signer's ability to obtain other credit. If you consider this option, make sure everyone involved understands the financial commitment before moving forward. A co-signer isn't necessary or appropriate for every buyer. 8. Read the Loan Terms Carefully Before Signing Getting approved is an important milestone, but understanding your loan agreement is just as important. Before signing, make sure you understand: Interest rate (APR): The annual percentage rate reflects the cost of borrowing and can help you compare financing offers. Loan term: A longer term may lower the monthly payment but can increase the total interest paid. Total amount financed: Understand how much you're borrowing after any down payment and applicable credits. Monthly payment: Make sure the payment fits your budget alongside your other expenses. Additional charges and conditions: Review any fees, optional products, and other terms included in the agreement. Take your time, ask questions, and make sure you understand the agreement. Our goal is to help you make an informed decision that you're comfortable with. 9. Remember That Your Credit Journey Isn't Over An auto loan can be an opportunity to continue building positive financial habits, provided the payments fit comfortably within your budget. Making payments on time and managing your other debts responsibly may help support your credit over time. However, credit improvement isn't guaranteed, and the impact of an auto loan depends on your overall credit profile and how the account is reported. Before taking on a new loan, make sure you're confident you can manage the payments. Protecting your financial stability is just as important as getting behind the wheel of a new vehicle. Ready to Explore Your Auto Financing Options in Malvern, Ohio? At Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, we know that life doesn't always go according to plan. If past financial challenges have affected your credit, we want you to know that you can still take the first step toward exploring your options. You don't need perfect credit to start a conversation about financing. What matters is understanding your current situation, setting a realistic budget, and working with a team that can help you explore potential solutions. If you're ready to shop for your next car, truck, or SUV, we invite you to visit Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Malvern, Ohio. Talk with our team about your needs, ask questions about the financing process, and let us help you determine what steps may make sense for you. Your next vehicle could be closer than you think. Sincerely, Dan Millat General Manager Daystar Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Malvern, Ohio Financing is subject to credit approval and lender requirements. Not all applicants will qualify, and terms, rates, down payment requirements, and available vehicles vary by individual circumstances. Daystar vs. Carvana

Why buy at Daystar vs. Carvana?

Why Buy Local: The Case for Daystar CDJR Over Carvana Oct 7, 2026 ·Dan Millat, General Manager A local franchised dealer like Daystar Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram gives you three things Carvana's online model cannot: a test drive before you pay, a price you can negotiate, and a service department a short drive away that stands behind the sale. You drive it before you own it At a dealership, the test drive comes before the paperwork. You sit in the seat, check the sightlines, back a trailer up to the hitch, and listen for anything that sounds wrong. If two trims are on the lot, you can drive both in one afternoon. Carvana flips that order. You buy first, and its 7-day return window stands in for the test drive. That window is capped at 400 miles, with a $1 charge for each mile over, and you must start the return by 8 p.m. Eastern on day seven. Returning a car is also a bigger job than declining one. Financing and registration have to be unwound, and a refund can take 10 to 15 business days. At Daystar, a vehicle that does not feel right costs you nothing but the drive to Malvern. New vehicles, factory incentives and custom orders Daystar is a franchised Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram dealer, so new Ram 1500s, Jeep Wranglers, Dodge Chargers and Chrysler Pacificas are its core business. Buying new at Daystar comes with: The full factory warranty, starting from mile one. Manufacturer rebates and special financing on new vehicle s. Custom orders. Daystar will order a vehicle from the factory in the color, trim and options you want. Certified pre-owned vehicles, backed by the manufacturer rather than a third party. Commercial trucks and vans, including Ram chassis cabs and ProMaster vans for business buyers. Daystar also stocks used vehicles, including a selection under $20,000, so you can compare new against used on the same lot. Service after the sale The biggest difference shows up after you drive home. Daystar has its own service and parts departments on site, with two Level 3 Chrysler Master Certified Technicians on staff. The people who sold you the vehicle work in the same building as the people who fix it. That matters most for warranty work. Factory warranty repairs and recalls on Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles are done at franchised dealers, with factory parts and diagnostic equipment. Daystar also offers rental vehicles while yours is in the shop. Carvana has no service department. Its 100-day, 4,189-mile limited warranty is administered by a separate company, SilverRock, through a network of approved repair shops. Motor1 reported a $100 deductible at in-network shops and $350 elsewhere. That same Motor1 story shows what the gap can look like. A buyer found a fuel leak within days, and the nearest in-network shop was 90 minutes away. Her choices were a tow, paying her own mechanic and waiting for reimbursement, or returning the car. Price, fees and trade-ins Carvana's price is fixed. The listed price, the delivery fee and the doc fee are all non-negotiable, so the number on the screen is the only number you will get. A dealership sale is a conversation. The vehicle price, your trade-in value and your financing can each be discussed, and factory incentives can come off the top. CarWhere's review of 3,233 verified deals found half of new-car buyers paid at least 6% below MSRP. Two fee details are worth knowing before buying online: Shipping. Carvana's delivery is free in local markets, but long-distance transfers can run from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand. That fee is not refunded if you return the car. Your trade-in. If you trade a vehicle to Carvana and later return your purchase, Carvana keeps the trade-in either way. At Daystar, your trade is appraised by a person who can look at it, and you can ask how they reached the number. Nothing changes hands until you have driven the vehicle and agreed to the deal. Real people, real accountability Daystar is a family-owned dealership on Alliance Road in Malvern, serving drivers from Canton, Carrollton, Alliance and Dover. If something goes wrong, you can walk in and talk to the person who sold you the vehicle, or to the owner's team. Carfax named it a Top-Rated Dealer in 2024 and 2025. A local dealer's reputation is built in its own community. Its customers are neighbors, and a bad experience travels fast in a small town. That is a strong reason to make things right. Carvana is a legitimate, profitable company that sold 596,641 vehicles in 2025. At that scale, support runs through chat and call queues, and its record on paperwork is mixed. North Carolina, Illinois and Michigan each suspended a Carvana dealer license in 2021 and 2022 over title-transfer delays. Those cases are resolved, and Connecticut settled a similar complaint for $1.5 million in January 2025. An Ohio dealer handles Ohio titles and registration every day, in an office you can visit.

Whats my trade worth?

What's My Trade-In Worth?

What's My Trade-In Worth? A Northeast Ohio Driver's Guide Oct 6, 2026 ·Dan Millat, General Manager Your trade-in is worth what a dealer can confirm about it: its mileage, its condition, its history, and how many local buyers want one like it. Online estimates are a useful starting point, but the real number comes from someone looking at your actual vehicle. Here is how that number gets built, and how to make sure yours is as high as it should be. What goes into a trade-in value Every appraisal, at any dealership, starts with the same handful of facts. Year, make, model, and trim. A Laramie is not a Tradesman, and a Rubicon is not a Sport. Trim and options can move the number by thousands. Mileage. Lower is better, but mileage matters most when it is well above or below average for the vehicle's age. Condition. Paint, interior, tires, brakes, glass, and anything a mechanic would flag. The appraiser is estimating what it will cost to make the vehicle ready for its next owner. History. Accidents, number of owners, and title status all show up on a vehicle history report. A clean, one-owner history helps. Service records. Proof of regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance tells a buyer the vehicle was cared for. Market demand. What similar vehicles are selling for right now, in this area. This is the factor that changes month to month. What's different in Northeast Ohio National pricing guides do not drive on our roads. Three local factors shape what a vehicle is worth here. Rust. Months of road salt take a toll on rocker panels, wheel wells, frames, and brake lines. An appraiser in Ohio will look underneath. A vehicle that has been washed through the winter, or undercoated, stands out from one that has not. Four-wheel and all-wheel drive. Snow-belt buyers want traction. A 4x4 truck or an AWD SUV generally draws more interest here than the same vehicle in two-wheel drive, and interest tends to climb as winter approaches. Trucks and SUVs. Between farm work, towing, hunting season, and lake-effect snow, Ram trucks, Jeep Wranglers, and Grand Cherokees are steady sellers in Stark, Carroll, and Tuscarawas counties. If you are trading one in, local demand is on your side. How to get your number The fastest way to start is online. Our Sell Your Car page lets you enter your vehicle's details from home, whether you are trading toward something new or simply want to sell. Have these ready before you begin: Your VIN or license plate number Current mileage Trim level and major options An honest read on condition, including any warning lights, damage, or rust Your loan payoff amount, if you still owe on it An online figure is a starting point. The final value is confirmed when we see the vehicle in person, which is why an accurate description up front saves everyone a surprise later. If getting to Malvern is a challenge, ask about our sight-unseen trade appraisal. Five ways to raise your value before the appraisal Clean it, inside and out. Include the undercarriage. A clean vehicle reads as a cared-for vehicle. Gather your paperwork. Title or loan information, registration, and every service record you can find. Bring everything that came with it. Both key fobs, the owner's manual, floor mats, the spare, and any removed parts such as a third-row seat or tonneau cover. Fix the small things. Burned-out bulbs, wiper blades, and low fluids are cheap to handle. Skip major repairs, which rarely pay for themselves at trade-in. Take care of open recalls. Recall work is free at a franchised dealer and removes a question mark from the appraisal. Trade in or sell it yourself? Selling privately can bring a higher price, but it comes with listings, phone calls, strangers on test drives, and handling the title transfer and payment yourself. Trading in is one stop: we handle the paperwork and any loan payoff. There is also a tax advantage many Ohio buyers miss. When you trade toward a new vehicle from a new-vehicle dealer, Ohio charges sales tax on the price after your trade-in credit is subtracted ( Ohio Revised Code 5739.01(H)). Trade a $15,000 vehicle toward a $40,000 new truck and you pay tax on $25,000. At a 6.5% rate, for example, that is $975 back in your pocket. The credit applies to new-vehicle purchases; it does not reduce the taxable price of a used vehicle. This is general information, not tax advice. Our finance team can show you the exact figures for your county and your deal. Find out what yours is worth The only way to know your number is to ask. Start on our Sell Your Car page, call our sales team at 330-525-2371, or stop by Daystar Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram at 7157 Alliance Rd NW in Malvern. We serve drivers from Canton, Carrollton, Alliance, Dover, and across Northeast Ohio, and we think you will find we are worth the drive.
